- ISAC is a national institute of CNR established to carry on activities of research, promotion and technology transfer in the following disciplines: Meteorology and its applications, Climate change and predictability, Atmospheric structure and composition,Observations of the
planet Earth.
-GOS, the Satellite Oceanography Group, as part of ISAC, is involved in the following activities:
Air-Sea interaction:
Air-sea exchange of energy and water in the Mediterranean area (SIOMED, ASIMED).
Atmospheric Saharan and industrial aerosol deposition in the
Mediterranean Sea and its effect on biological productivity (ADIOS).
Surface radiative budget in polar regions (ARTIST, PNRA).
Validation of empirical formulae for air-sea budget estimation at the air-sea interface (SIOMED, ASIMED).
Ocean response to atmospheric forcing:
Climatology of the Mediterranean Sea surface fields (SST, ocean colour, altimetry).
Mediterranean thermohaline cell variability and interactions with the Atlantic Ocean (numerical studies). (TRACMASS)
Atmospheric forcing influence on deep water formation and carbon cycle.
Mesoscale dynamics:
Physical-biological interactions conditioning primary productivity (SYMPLEX).
Basin scale mesoscale variability and surface circulation.
Mesoscale dynamics effects on tracer diffusion (TRACMASS).
Operational oceanography:
Near real time (NRT) production of SST fields for data assimilation in OGCM (MFSPP, MSTEP) and regional models (ADRICOSM).
Development of NRT ocean colour data products (chlorophyll and water quality parameters) for regional (ADRICOSM) and large scale studies(MFSTEP).
Satellite geophysical parameter retrieval and validation:
Development of regional ocean colour algorithms
Satellite data in situ validation
Sea surface altimetry and 3D structure of the ocean
Cloud, sea and ice classification methodology development
